Mei Semones is a Brooklyn-based, Michigan-native, jazz-influenced singer, songwriter, and guitarist bridging together different areas of Indie Rock, Bossanova, and Japanese Pop. In 2022, Mei graduated from the Berklee College of Music, majoring in Guitar Performance with a Jazz focus. Upon graduation she was awarded the Professional Education Division Achievement Award in Professional Music for having the highest GPA in her major. While at Berklee, Mei met her current band members, which includes violist, Noah Leong, and violinist, Claudius Agrippa, both of whom add satisfying layers to Mei’s wholesome songwriting.
By being bilingual, Mei is able to write her songs in a unique hybrid of Japanese and English while still maintaining her warm sound. Her newest EP, Kabutomushi , is the perfect soundtrack to re-familiarize yourself with the sun, trees, and warm-weather insects. Kabutomushi , which is a Japanese rhinoceros beetle, is the full-project built around her previous singles "Tegami" (Letter), "Wakare no Kotoba" (Parting Words), and "Inaka" (Countryside). Kabutomushi is a lovers' picnic in the park for first-time listeners, and a soul-stirring “I missed you” embrace for familiar fans.
